Sam's Club is coming to far-west Katy

West Katy's shopping boom keeps rolling, and the next big name on the way is Sam's Club. A nearly 168,000-square-foot club with its own fuel station is under construction at Texas Heritage Marketplace, the $400 million development on I-10 that just welcomed Lowe's and Target.

Here's what to know:

  • It's going up at 29153 Katy Freeway, making it the first membership warehouse club on the I-10 stretch between Katy and Brookshire.

  • This is a full-size club (167,990 sq ft), with a members' gas station attached.

  • Construction was originally slated to wrap this past summer, but it's still underway. Developer NewQuest is now targeting early 2027, and Sam's Club hasn't announced an opening date yet.

  • It's part of a bigger wave: Lowe's opened in September and Target in October, with Academy, Burlington, Ulta, Spec's, and EoS Fitness targeted for early 2027.

  • Restaurants are filling in too. Whataburger is already open, and Olive Garden, Chili's, Biscuit Belly, and The Kebab Shop have signed on.

For families in Elyson, Cane Island, Jordan Ranch, and Sunterra, that means bulk shopping and cheaper gas without the drive east. Just maybe not until early next year.

Coming Soon

Katy's first Dave's Hot Chicken is on the way

Hot chicken fans, this one's for you. Dave's Hot Chicken, the chain that went from a parking lot to a billion-dollar company in eight years, is lining up its first Katy-area spot at Texas Heritage Marketplace.

Never heard of Dave's? Here's the short version. In 2017, four childhood friends in Los Angeles pooled $900. They bought a $150 fryer, borrowed tables from their parents, and started selling Nashville-style hot chicken in an East Hollywood parking lot. Lines stretched up to two hours. Some people even showed up after it sold out and asked to buy the crumbs.

From there, things got wild:

  • Technomic, a restaurant research firm, named Dave's America's fastest-growing restaurant chain two years in a row.

  • Drake, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Strahan, and Usher have all invested.

  • In 2025, an investment company bought Dave's in a deal worth about $1 billion.

  • Today there are nearly 400 locations in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and the Middle East.

  • The menu is simple: jumbo chicken tenders and sliders, with seven spice levels from No Spice to Reaper. The Reaper is so hot you have to sign a waiver before you eat it.

Here's what we know about the new spot coming to Katy:

  • It’s expected to be a 2,100-square-foot space at 1552 Heritage Oak Lane.

  • Construction is set to run from November into early 2027, with an opening hopefully coming soon afterward.

  • Dave's hasn't added Katy to its location list yet, and hours and pricing haven't been announced, but I personally can’t wait.

So this one's a "coming soon," not a "go now." But if you've been driving across town for your spice fix, relief (or more heat) is on the way. Might be time to start practicing your waiver signature.

Roegels: The pitmaster who bet on his own name

First things first: it's pronounced "RAY-guls." And the story behind the name is worth knowing.

Russell Roegels has been smoking meat since he was 15. He cooked barbecue to pay his way through college, served five years in the Air Force, then went right back to the pits. In 2001, he took over a Baker's Ribs franchise in Houston with his wife, Misty.

For years, he cooked someone else's recipes. But Russell wanted more. He started adding extra salt and pepper to the brisket and ribs. Then in 2014, Texas Monthly's barbecue editor stopped by expecting average chain food. Instead, he found some of the best brisket in Houston.

Two weeks later, Russell ended the franchise deal and put his own name on the sign. Same building, same day. As he tells it, "People walked into Baker's Ribs, and they walked out of Roegels Barbecue."

The bet paid off. Roegels has landed on Texas Monthly's list of the 50 best barbecue joints in Texas more than once. In 2022, the Roegels brought it to our side of town. It's still a family affair: Misty runs the bar and makes the famous bourbon banana pudding, and their kids help run the place.

Here's what to order:

  • The classics, all smoked over post oak: brisket, house-made sausage, smoked turkey, and pork ribs.

  • The brisket sides: brisket mac and cheese, brisket loaded fries, and brisket Mexican street corn.

  • Save room for Misty's bourbon banana pudding. Trust us.

  • Today's your day: "Two-Meat Tuesday" runs $16.99.
