Happy Tuesday, Katy 🤠

If you stepped outside this weekend and thought, "Yep, summer's here" — you're not wrong. Memorial Day is already behind us, the heat is on, the mosquitoes are clocking in for duty, and the smell of chlorine is drifting over every neighborhood fence in town. But the vibes are good, y'all. School's wrapping up, Central Green is stacking up free concerts, and the Census Bureau just reminded the country what we already knew: people really want to live out here.

Let's get into it.

Now, in today's edition:

  • 🏘️ Fulshear — #2 fastest-growing city in America, three years running

  • 🛣️ Grand Parkway's missing southern link just got a green light

  • 🚧 Katy Hockley Road: the one-way squeeze isn't over yet (but there's a date)

  • 🍽️ Katy's first Uyghur restaurant just opened — and there's a buffet

  • 35+ events & more

Fulshear Is Officially the #2 Fastest-Growing City in America — Again

When the U.S. Census Bureau released its annual population estimates on May 14, the headline for Fulshear was a familiar one: 21 percent growth in a single year. That's three straight years at #2 nationally — and only Celina, north of Dallas, grew faster. If you've been watching the cranes and the construction trucks out here, now you have the receipts.

Here's what’s happening:

  • Fulshear added roughly 11,200 new residents between mid-2024 and mid-2025. The city's population now stands at 64,630 — up from 1,134 in the 2010 Census.

  • All five of the fastest-growing cities in America are Texas suburbs: Celina (24.6%), Fulshear (~21%), Princeton (18.1%), Melissa (14.5%), and Anna (10.2%).

  • Two major road projects are racing to keep pace — the FM 1463 widening is targeted for late 2026, and the Westpark Tollway extension opened its first two miles ahead of schedule in February, with the full four-mile run to downtown Fulshear expected by August.

  • A proposed Home Depot near Cross Creek Ranch drew a packed City Council chamber on May 12. Residents raised concerns about truck traffic, lighting, and walkability. The council postponed the incentive vote and is expected to bring it back with conditions on traffic studies, landscaping buffers, and delivery hours.

"Our rapid growth is a true testament to the unique charm, strong sense of community, and high quality of life that Fulshear offers," Mayor Don McCoy said.

The next 24 months of decisions on roads, schools, water, and retail will shape what Fulshear feels like in 2030. Worth paying attention to — and maybe showing up at City Hall for.

How High Are Art Prices Today? The Latest from Spring Auctions…

Let’s check out the latest auction highlights…

$85,800,000 for Rothko
$98,385,000 for a ANOTHER Rothko
$107,585,000 for a Brancusi sculpture
$181,200,000 for a Pollock

Sounds crazy, but those masterpieces were once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for the ultra-rich buyers.

Postwar contemporary art’s scarcity is largely what’s driven price appreciation that’s comparable to the S&P over the last thirty years.*

This trend has made art investing out of reach for most people.

But since 2017, Masterworks has taken a data-driven approach to investing in art, making it accessible to individual investors.

Masterworks members have the opportunity to invest in shares of artworks by legendary artists like Rothko, Basquiat, and Warhol. When a piece sells, they get a share of the proceeds.

Over $1.2 billion has been deployed across over 500+ artworks.

And over the last six months, seven of those have sold. Overall, 29 exits to-date have delivered net annualized returns like 16.5%, 17.6% and 17.8% on works held longer than one year, not including those unsold.

The Grand Parkway Loop Just Got One Step Closer

If you've ever driven the Grand Parkway south past Sugar Land and wondered where it disappears to — that gap is finally moving. On May 14, Fort Bend County Commissioners Court voted to hand TxDOT the reins on Segment C — the missing 26-mile stretch that will eventually connect US 59/I-69 in Sugar Land all the way down to SH 288 near Rosharon.

Things to know:

  • Segment C will be a four-lane, controlled-access toll road with intermittent frontage roads.

  • Fort Bend County pays nothing — TxDOT absorbs the full project cost.

  • When complete, the finished Grand Parkway loop doubles as a hurricane evacuation route for coastal residents.

No construction date is set yet — design and environmental approvals still need to clear. But this is the first real momentum on this stretch in nearly a decade.

Why it matters for Katy: Our piece of the Grand Parkway (Segment E at I-10) is the busiest in the system. Closing the southern loop should eventually pull through-traffic off US 59 and the Westpark Tollway — meaning fewer drivers cutting through Katy on the way south.

Road Watch

Katy Hockley Road: Yes, It's Still One-Way — Here's When That Changes

If you've been white-knuckling the southbound-only squeeze on Katy Hockley between Morton and Clay (I know I have!), here's the latest from City Hall: the project is officially "on track," but two-way traffic isn't coming back until mid-October — weather permitting.

Here's what to know:

  • CenterPoint Energy is relocating two natural-gas mains that run the full length of the project. That utility work has pushed some intermediate milestones later than planned.

  • Gas work wraps mid-summer → storm sewers and box culverts go in next → then concrete paving.

  • What we're getting: a four-lane concrete boulevard with turn lanes, a real median, and underground drainage — roughly 3,000 feet of rebuilt road.

The city says it looked at briefly restoring two-way traffic between phases but decided against it. Swapping detour signage takes about a week each direction, and a separate sewer rehab project is simultaneously underway on the west side of the road — so a temporary switch just wasn't practical.

Until then: Katy Hockley stays southbound only. Northbound drivers, your detour is Pitts Road or Katy Hockley Cutoff Road. Hang in there — concrete is coming.

Local Restaurant Spotlight 🍽️

Turan Uyghur Kitchen — From Kashgar to the Grand Parkway

Before Alimjan "Ali" Omar was a restaurant owner, he was an urban design engineer in Suzhou, China — watching fellow Uyghur travelers struggle to find halal food and a dignified place to stay. So he did something about it: he converted a seven-story building in Suzhou into a community hub with a halal restaurant, a masjid, a grocery, and guest rooms.

That same instinct followed him to America. Omar opened the first Turan Uyghur Kitchen in Plano in 2023, then Houston's Chinatown in 2024 — and when he noticed customers kept driving in from Katy and Spring, he knew what to do next. This February, Katy got its own location on the Grand Parkway, making it the first Uyghur restaurant in the western suburbs.

"Food is powerful," Omar told Edgu Bilig. "It brings people together and opens the door to meaningful conversation. That is the mission of Turan."

Here's some key details:

  • 🥘 The menu is 100% halal and built around Central Asian staples: hand-pulled laghman noodles, lamb kabobs, tugur dumplings, and the signature Qorma Chop — steam-fried noodles you won't find anywhere else out here. Honestly, just writing this made me hungry.

  • 🍴 Not sure where to start? The Katy location runs a weekday lunch buffet ($14.99 adults / $9.99 kids, 11:30 AM – 3:30 PM) — try a little of everything before you commit.

This is one of those places that makes Katy's food scene genuinely interesting and unique. An engineer-turned-restaurateur who built his first community hub halfway around the world, now doing the same thing right here on 99. Go try it. 🌍
