Two weeks. That's roughly what stands between us and the great August scramble - backpacks, meet-the-teacher nights, alarm clocks waking the house up before the sun. If you've got kids or grandkids in Katy ISD, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
The last real stretch of summer is here, and Katy is showing up with a full weekend calendar and some big local news worth catching up on.

After 17 years, it’s finally coming back
If you've ever burned a whole day driving to Rosenberg for a driver's license renewal, a teen's road test, or a CDL appointment, this one is for you. The Texas Department of Public Safety has filed a $5.6 million project to build a full-service driver's license office right here in Katy, at 23626 Kingsland Blvd – about 4 miles east of Katy Mills.
Here are the key details:
Construction is set to start September 1, 2026, with a target completion of March 30, 2027. As with anything DPS, schedules can shift.
The new office will be 22,960 square feet on 9.3 acres, with 32 service counters – making it one of the larger DPS offices in the Houston region.
You'll be able to do all the standard driver license services, plus commercial driver license (CDL) skills testing. It'll have 270 parking spots and dedicated vehicle testing canopies.
A little history – Katy's last DPS office, on George Bush Drive, closed in 2010 after nearly 30 years. We've been driving 20+ miles to the Rosenberg mega-center ever since.
It's the kind of quality-of-life win you don't think about often, but curse loudly the one Tuesday morning you have to burn a full day at a DPS office two counties away.

What’s New
Grange is getting its own "town square" – 20 acres of it
Johnson Development just filled in the details on Ricestead – the 20-acre amenity hub coming to its Grange master-planned community off Morton Road and FM 2855. Think of it as Grange's downtown, and honestly, it's ambitious.
Here's what you should know:
The amenity list is big – a resort-style pool, a separate lap pool for people actually trying to swim, and a six-court open-air pickleball pavilion (big win, given how packed Katy's public pickleball supply is right now).
The centerpiece is Harvest Hall – a full clubhouse with fitness center, community room, co-working spaces, and offices – plus a village green built for outdoor concerts, farmers markets, and seasonal events.
There's also a curated retail strip planned along Franz Road that Katy folks outside of Grange will be able to use too.
Groundbreaking is targeted for 2026, with an opening in 2027. Grange itself is on track for about 2,400 homes at buildout.
Even if you don't live in Grange, this one's worth watching – it's another datapoint for how Katy's newest master-planned communities are baking gathering spaces right in instead of pushing residents to the next strip center.
Local Restaurant Spotlight 🍽️
Saigon Hustle plants a flag in Cinco Ranch
Cinco Ranch has a serious new Vietnamese spot, and the backstory is every bit as good as the banh mi. Saigon Hustle – a Houston-born fast-casual concept – officially opened at LaCenterra on May 14, and it's already a favorite.
Here's what to know:
The founders are two Houston moms – Sandy Nguyen and Cassie Ghaffar – who started Saigon Hustle as a ghost kitchen in 2020 because they wanted food that was fast, nourishing, and rooted in Vietnamese heritage. From ghost kitchen to three brick-and-mortars is a real climb.
The Cinco Ranch spot is their third location and their first anywhere in the Katy area – Nguyen told CultureMap the team had been asked to come to Katy for a while and finally decided to plant a flag.
The menu leans into the classics – banh mi, pho, vermicelli bowls, pork rice bowls, fried egg rolls – with the kind of details that make regulars: house-pickled carrots and papaya, in-house paté, in-house aioli.
Hours are 11 AM to 11 PM daily, including late-night – a rarity for LaCenterra.

Description: 1,200 illuminated drones recreate favorite Harry Potter characters and scenes across a 65-minute open-air show set to John Williams' film score, with a live electric violinist and interactive LED wristbands for the crowd.
