Happy Tuesday, Katy 🤠

We're officially in the stretch of October where every porch on the block has a skeleton, a pumpkin, or a twelve-foot inflatable something. Halloween is 11 days out, the Rockets tip off their season tomorrow night, and the calendar is filling up fast.

But first, some news that matters a lot more than candy (although your kids may disagree) – especially if you live on the far west side.

Now, in today's edition:

  • A 24/7 ER is coming to far-west Katy

  • The FM 1463 slog nears the finish line

  • Spotlight: Pearl & Vine's lakefront date night

  • 30+ events & more

— Grant Hamilton

P.S. Thank you so much to all of you who have been reaching out with suggestions of local businesses for me to feature. Keep them coming! If there’s a spot around town you know and love, please reply and let me know about it!

News

A 24/7 ER is coming to far-west Katy

If you live out in Elyson, Cane Island, or Sunterra, you know emergency care hasn't exactly kept pace with all the new rooftops. That's about to change: Houston Methodist just broke ground on a brand-new, around-the-clock emergency center at Texas Heritage Marketplace.

Here's what to know:

  • It's a $15 million, 11,150-square-foot freestanding ER at 29133 Katy Freeway, just east of Texas Heritage Parkway.

  • Inside: 10 exam rooms, plus X-ray, CT imaging, and an on-site lab.

  • An experienced ER physician will be on-site 24/7, backed by ER nurses, a radiology tech, and an on-call ultrasound tech.

  • Officials call it Houston Methodist's westernmost ER "before reaching Columbus," meaning a lot less I-10 driving in an emergency.

  • Crews have already poured the slab and are standing up steel, with doors targeted to open in summer 2027.

It's part of the larger Texas Heritage Marketplace buildout, where Lowe's and Target recently opened. As Houston Methodist West CEO Carl Little put it, "In an emergency, seconds matter."

City Updates

The FM 1463 slog nears the finish line

If FM 1463 has been testing your patience since 2022, take heart. TxDOT's long-running widening project is finally in its home stretch.

Here's where things stand:

  • The project widens 6.7 miles of FM 1463 between I-10 and FM 1093: six lanes north of Spring Green Road, and four lanes with raised medians to the south.

  • It's a roughly $108 million job that broke ground back in February 2022.

  • TxDOT said most of the construction should be done by late 2026, with all of it complete by July 2027.

  • The remaining work has centered on new northbound concrete lanes, plus permanent signals, sidewalks, and landscaping.

For Cinco Ranch, Tamarron, and Firethorne commuters, relief may finally be in sight. (We'll keep an eye on it – these dates have a way of sliding.)

Local Restaurant Spotlight 🍽️

Pearl & Vine: A Katy kid's dream, built with Dad

As a teenager, Ryan Hallsted drove a golf cart to his first job as a kitchen helper at a neighborhood country club. Back then, the plan was to follow his dad, Jake, into the family business: running nursing homes.

That's not quite how it worked out. Ryan spent about 20 years in restaurant kitchens, from sports bars to fine dining, and trained at the Culinary Institute of America along the way. When he finally pitched his dad and stepmom, Shawn, on a white-tablecloth restaurant back home in Katy, they didn't just cheer him on. They invested.

Pearl & Vine opened on the water near Cane Island in February 2021, and the whole family left its mark. Ryan and Jake designed the building and picked the lakefront spot. Shawn designed the inside. And Dad got his own signature on the place: look for Jake's Cellar. Ryan, a former Cinco Ranch High student, says folks don't always think of it as a family restaurant. But in his words, "everyone in here is like family."

What to know:

  • It's upscale New American with a serious steak-and-seafood lean. The open kitchen means you can watch your dinner come together.

  • Crowd favorites: lump crab cakes, char-grilled octopus, crispy-skin salmon, shrimp & grits, and an Elote Caesar (think Mexican street corn meets Caesar, with cornbread croutons) that reviewers can't stop talking about.

  • Dinner nightly from 4 p.m., brunch Saturday and Sunday, and a daily 4–7 p.m. happy hour if you want to test the waters first.

My wife and I are big fans. It's our go-to for special date nights and whenever family comes to town. My recommendation? The char-grilled octopus, if you're into that kind of thing like me. If you've been saving Pearl & Vine for "someday," consider this your nudge.
