Tesla could bring nearly 10,000 jobs to our corner of Texas

One of the biggest job announcements our region has seen in years may be taking shape just south of us. Tesla is looking at Fort Bend County for a roughly $10.1 billion solar-manufacturing plant – code-named "Project Crystal Sun" – that could eventually employ close to 10,000 people.

Here's what to know:

  • The plant would make solar cells and modules. Goal: about 9,712 full-time jobs by 2033. Total yearly pay: about $1.3 billion.

  • Building it would bring more than 1,100 construction jobs at peak.

  • The proposed site is in Fort Bend County near FM 762 and FM 1994, south of Richmond – a regional project rather than one right here in Katy.

  • Local approvals are moving forward, and Tesla's application now heads to state officials for review.

  • If everything comes together, construction would run through 2028, with the plant up and running in early 2029.

Nothing's final yet – this is still in the early stages – but a manufacturer this size choosing our region would be a serious economic win for Katy-area families. We'll keep an eye on it.

City Updates

UH's Katy campus is booming – and it shows

If it feels like the University of Houston is putting down deeper roots in Katy, you're right. The UH Katy campus just posted a nearly 52% jump in enrollment this fall – and it's dressed for the occasion with a fresh red-and-white makeover at the front doors.

Here are the main details:

  • Enrollment is up nearly 52% over last fall, and in-person and hybrid class sections are up more than 20%.

  • Two brand-new degrees launched this fall: a master's with an AI focus and a B.S. in Multidisciplinary Engineering.

  • Six UH colleges – business, education, sciences, liberal arts, engineering, and nursing – have expanded their Katy footprint.

  • "We're seeing a lot of momentum in Katy," says Dr. Jay Neal, who helps lead UH's Sugar Land and Katy campuses. "We have more students on campus, more classes and more academic options."

The bottom line: a four-year degree in engineering, nursing, business, or AI is increasingly available right here at 22400 Grand Circle Blvd – no drive into the city required.

Local Restaurant Spotlight 🍽️

Babin's Seafood House celebrates 25 years in Katy

Some restaurants come and go, but Babin's has been serving up South Louisiana seafood on the Katy Freeway since 2001. This fall, the homegrown favorite just celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Here's what to know:

  • You'll find it at 21851 Katy Freeway, with a second location in Shenandoah.

  • Babin's marked the milestone with a special three-course anniversary menu in September.

  • What to order: Start with a cup of gumbo, then go all in on the crawfish étouffée. Save room for a bowl of bisque, because 25 years in, Babin's knows what it's doing, and so should your appetite.

A quarter-century of getting gumbo right in Katy is worth celebrating – go grab a bowl and toast to 25 more.
