Two things I've been noticing lately: high school football stadiums are packed again, and every time I drive down I-10, another crane has gone up somewhere. This week's stories land right on that theme – a town that keeps growing, and the traditions that keep it feeling like home.

A quarter-billion-dollar investment in Katy
Memorial Hermann is putting $282.5 million into expanding its Katy hospital, and it's the biggest healthcare investment our area has seen in years. Construction on a brand-new eight-story patient tower kicks off later this year, right as the hospital marks 45 years in Katy this November.
Here's what to know:
A new 8-story patient tower with more inpatient beds and advanced imaging is the centerpiece of the expansion.
A rooftop Life Flight helipad means faster air-ambulance response in the worst emergencies – a real quality-of-care upgrade.
Expanded pediatric ER, surgical services, and women's & children's services are all part of the plan, along with pharmacy, lab, kitchen, and cafeteria upgrades.
Timing: groundwork is already underway; the major vertical construction begins in late 2026.
Why now: Katy is one of the fastest-growing suburban markets in Texas, and this expansion is Memorial Hermann's answer to a population that's boomed faster than local services.
Whether or not you personally use the hospital (my family has, and we’re grateful for all their help!), expect this to be a very visible construction project – and eventually, a lot more advanced care available close to home instead of a drive into the Med Center.

City Updates
The Fort Bend County Fair turns 90 – starting with two days of championship BBQ
The fair everyone in Katy grew up on is hitting a big milestone this year – 90 years – and it all kicks off with the Championship BBQ Cook-Off on September 18–19 in Rosenberg. Nearly 100 teams competing, food that lives up to the "championship" part of the name, and live music going late into the night.
Here are the main details:
Friday, Sept 18 runs 1 PM to 11:30 PM with Los Morales on stage.
Saturday, Sept 19 runs 9 AM to 11:30 PM, with country act Cole Phillips headlining.
The main fair runs Sept 24 through Oct 4, with Sawyer Brown, Pat Green, and Gary P. Nunn leading the concert lineup.
The Kick-Off Parade rolls Friday, Sept 25 at 9 AM from the Richmond courthouse west on Hwy 90A.
Ninety years is a serious milestone – this year's theme is "90 Years Strong. Honoring the Past, Growing the Future." Whether you go for the BBQ, the carnival, or the mutton bustin', it's a Fort Bend/Katy tradition worth the short drive.
Local Restaurant Spotlight 🍽️
Meet Temptation's Bite – the Venezuelan bakery pouring family history into every cachito
Tucked into a Kingsland Boulevard storefront, Temptation's Bite has quietly become one of Katy's most beloved little spots. It's the kind of place where a cachito comes out warm, the golfeado has real cinnamon depth, and the person behind the counter might actually be the owner.
The main details to know:
The story: mother-daughter duo Nora Varela and Melissa Merlina moved from Venezuela to Katy in 2018 and opened the bakery in October 2022 – Nora's lifelong dream and Melissa's gift to her mom.
What to get: the cruffins (croissant × muffin) and Venezuelan cachitos are the crowd favorites; the golfeados are also a specialty; they bake lasagnas and full cakes to order too.
Recognized: the culinary docuseries Table of Nations recently profiled the shop.

Description: Third annual Sugar Land Space Cowboys climb honoring the 25th anniversary of 9/11 – 2,200 steps (110 stories, the height of the WTC towers), with moments of silence at 8:46 and 9:03 AM. Every participant gets a free ticket to the Sept. 15 Space Cowboys home game vs. Las Vegas.

Description: Five race formats to choose from, ranging from a full sprint triathlon down to a standalone 5K, with Typhoon Texas as the swim venue.
